A particular requirement is compliance with the European Communities Bathing Water Directive: experience has shown that cost-effective environmentally acceptable schemes can be designed incorporating long sea outfalls but only if all major sources of pollutant loading are considered concurrently and sewer, river and marine modelling techniques and standards harmonised. To develop this integrated approach, the UK Water Industry has mounted a major research programme. The resulting procedure is described and the concept of use areas and associated quality standards introduced.
