Odour Generation From Anaerobically Digested Sludge

ABSTRACT
Anaerobic digestion is carried out to stabilize biosolids so that it is acceptable for land disposal. Although no precise definition exists for stability of anaerobically digested sludges, a major factor is that odours be low. Over the past 5 years, research has been conducted to evaluate the odour potential from anaerobically digested sludges to determine the factors that influence odours. It has been found that odours are typically produced from dewatered sludge cakes and these odours are primarily associated with organic sulphur compounds. It was found that effective digestion does not guarantee that organic sulphur levels will be low and the type of dewatering equipment will determine the magnitude of organic sulphur compounds generated.
