Urban urgency: the UN’s support for water supply and sanitation in developing countries
UN-Habitat, the UN system’s ‘city agency’, has had to scale back its water sector activities because of a reduction in the funding it has received from donors. With IWA’s second Development Congress due to take place in Kuala Lumpur later this year, Keith Hayward looks at the water supply and sanitation challenges urban areas in Asia are facing, and looks at UN-Habitat’s future priorities for working around the world.

Including... Sanitation drive launched to speed access to services. On 21 June, some of the most powerful figures in the water world met to give their seal of approval to the launch of the ‘Sustainable sanitation: five-year drive to 2015’, a push to speed up progress on the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of halving those without access to sanitation by that year.
